A moment of reflection for your hectic day

Your replies on my last email humbled me ☺️! 

 

To connect and exchange with you fulfills me. It's my main intention to write to you. So thank you so much for taking time and sharing your challenge on what and how to start. 

 

One big insight from all your responses in Switzerland, the USA, Germany and Portugal. 


You're not alone. 


In common you've got, that in the hectic daily life, you need to find time for yourself and balance among the different roles you carry while fulfilling your expectations and the one from others. 

 

Especially with your kids and partner, you see yourself in the dance of guilt, and "but, I need my care". And also, you feel the constant pressure of performing in your job and providing for your family.

 

And before you realize you'll say something like, that you feel tired, exhausted, disconnect, overwhelmed. Would you agree?

 

Here's what I'd love to share with you from my experience. 


A vital thought that I've come to believe is that there's no such thing as balance. You can't control happenings and events in the outer world. They come, go, and you'll need to find a way to manage it. 

 

I couldn't have said it better, than Berta in her response to my last email: 

 

"So my life is always in adjust mode, starting, figuring out the best way, lots of times one step in front, two in the wrong direction, always making little adjustments."

 

 

Though you may not control the world around you, you do have the chance to balance within yourself. It's a constant process, of knowing who you are and what's best for you. 

 

I've come to experience that my Yoga practice grounds me, strengthens my body, clears my mind, and fosters my compassion and detachment. And when I speak about balance, that these senses of being express it to me the most at the moment: 

 

Ground, strength, clarity, compassion, surrender.

 

They help me to deal with the ups and downs of daily life in a rooted place and with an open heart likewise and therefore I feel less stressed, anxious, and overloaded. 

 

To deal with daily life is a practice. Some days don't work well. And it's ok for me as long as I keep trying the next day again.

 

 

So, my questions are, supposing that taking care of yourself, does enhance the quality of your life:

 

Why do you feel challenged to do it? 

Why do you carry resistance turning to yourself first? 

Why do you feel guilty about doing it? 🤔

Bring out the best of yourself! (Psst, a glass of wine can help 🍷)

How's it going? 

Well, I'm fighting my hangover today. I can't even tell you the last time I drank a bottle of Monte Velho red wine. From today's headache speaking it must be a while. 

My A-wesome girlfriend Camilla and I started nipping a glass of wine while having dinner and got involved in a conversation. We quickly build it up to a hot steam debate about life and shared stories with wild gesticulating arms (me), wide-open eyes and straight-forward questions. 

Kiddos, by the way, were happily awake too! Our Carnival! 🙃

When Camilla's husband Nuno arrived home, we got the fact, that we totally lost time and had finished the wine realizing tomorrow would be W-W-Wednesday!! Speak: no sleeping in.


Anyway, the uplift of a spontaneous evening like this is so refreshing; I don't even care about my headache. And here's what I'd love to share with you from our conversation on motherhood.

When you want to bring out the best in your child, you'll need to bring out the best in yourself. I mean not only physically (aka looking stunning - and I know you do) but emotionally, intellectually, spiritually.


You'll need to challenge yourself to design the most vivid life and own it from the most honest and comprehensive place inside of you.

It's an ongoing, ever-changing process. There's always something new to discover, explore, work through. And your kid(s) walk(s) along with you and learn(s) by example.

It requires courage, strength and hard work as a sense of self-love and not only the strict discipline to pursue what you love.

And that's, where I think, my regular practice of Ashtanga Yoga, got me on track. To be able to develop this incredible stamina and will to grow and build my path every step along steadily. 


And the most beautiful fact of it all is this:

I took this wise snippet from the book "Big magic" by Elizabeth Gilbert. It's one of my favorite of all times because it helped me significantly to understand essential insights from my Ashtanga Yoga practice.

Moments like this one are priceless

Yes! 

I had a breakthrough the other day. 

Give me high five! 

One of these fabulous warm winter evenings last week we needed to end on the beach.The air was soft and salty, the sea quiet, small waves moving calmly in an even rhythm. 

Protected by the moonlight my son Zion was running in the sand meters away from me. Looking into the stars, spreading his arms, feeling his freedom. 

Now and then I heard him calling out: Mom, come and catch me! And after enjoying my moment I did speed up to play. 

After ma-a-a-any catches and out of breath we quietly walked side by side back. 

On the way, Zion wanted to grab a drink and asked me to go into this specific bar that I don't like. I replied that and mentioned that we could get our water in the car. Zion focused on reaching the bar he made his point: 

Oh Mom, he said, you don't need to buy anything there. It's just me. I want to choose a delicious juice.


It dawned on me: empathy. 

In his words, Zion asked me to

  • take his perspective  

  • understand his feeling of being in need to drink something that he loves in a place that's ok for him. 

  • not judge him for that and 

  • speak about how I understood it and I explained why I wouldn't choose the bar. 



How does it relate to Yoga?

I've come to understand, that Yoga can be applied as a method to self-reflection; to begin to explore, who you indeed are.

Because to give empathy, or in other words, to understand somebody's feelings, you'll need to be able to connect with this feeling and distinguish from it within yourself. And, the deeper you know yourself the better empathy's to give and receive. 

Speaking from my more than ten years of experience with a consistent Ashtanga Yoga practice empathy becomes tangible, even embodies.

It turns out to be an incredibly deep feeling of connection. 

So yes, I gave Zion his coins and joint him to choose his drink. 
We took a seat, chatted and looked at the sea. 🤙



In your everyday life, there're countless hidden nuggets of wisdom. 

When you listen carefully to whom surrounds you, you'll get the hints, insights, answers, new questions and understanding that are meant for you. Like me with my simple and clear empathy breakthrough.

SUPER HERO, YOU! (NOTE: Room For Myself @FEFI)

On Mother’s Day I received this comic, sent by beautiful woman, mother and inspirational Yoga Teacher Silvia Stojanovic. I was laughing out loud and thinking, hell yeah, that’s our mask - the super hero -  having the roles all together. Woman, mother, partner, entrepreneur and friend. 

Would you believe me?

Graciously, Im able to say: not quite, my friend. It’s not like this. I’ve found, fulfilling and combining these roles in daily life’s indeed physically and psychologically very demanding and the person, that falls short often is the one behind this mask.

I know, Im not alone with this truth. In conversations with female Ashtanga Yoga practitioners, who’ve decided to take on the Ashtanga Yoga practice, I’ve listened to these words often enough: 

I feel disconnected with myself. 
I don’t know, where “I” went. 
I’ve lost myself. 
I search for reinventing myself. 

In fact, speaking out loud these sensations is already a connective moment, in which you ask for your self. It can be a possible beginning or in new phase of internally thriving, seeking and growing in life and to believe, there’s more beyond the roles. 


Beyond there’s -  you.  
The basic dignity of being alive in your beautiful human body.

 

So, I believe, the questions could be:

How could you take care of yourself so you’re able to keep enjoying your roles and life without losing you? How could you rise and evolve, when sometimes time and space seem a way to short? 
How could you hold the space for others, when you’re feel empty, tired, disconnected?

 

Over the course of my 10 years personal practice I’ve come to see

Ashtanga Yoga as a way of taking care of myself. 



For example:
Ashtanga Yoga is also called a breathing method.  I believe, the breath is the simplest, yet most powerful and beautiful doorway to peace in mind.

A peaceful mind can serve you with clarity; to know and stay focused on what’s your purpose and intention is absolutely essential on a tight schedule and in the rollercoaster of life. 

The movements in the Ashtanga Yoga practice aligned with your breath make you incredibly strong. Strong for the challenging moments, for rising up from failure, for steeping into your vulnerability and transcending it into courage. 

The juice of the results from Ashtanga Yoga lies in a consistent and disciplined practice. It’s a form of discipline rooted in self-love and a consistency, that grows from acceptance and surrender. 

When your life’s upside down (it happens every now and then), the practice of Ashtanga Yoga will be along your side, guiding you on our path. It becomes a trustworthy friend. 

By practicing Ashtanga Yoga you’ll nourish your body in a way, that you’ll rock your life even in a high age. This practice’s about the “long-term”, meaning, what you put in your body today will define your tomorrow. 


So you could say, for you super hero, these are a few must haves: 

  • The ability to create access to peace of mind
  • Strength and focus through vulnerability, engagement and experience
  • Discipline rooted in Self-Love
  • Consistency, that grows through learning to accept and surrender
  • Having the guts to keep seeking truth and asking for help
  • A healthy body 

In my opinion, these are some precious qualities for life, that you’d need to work on every single day. And Ashtanga Yoga can help you do that. 

What Im trying to say is, that you ARE a super hero, yet let's not forget YOU. 

So would you give Ashtanga Yoga a try? Common, babe! You’ve got to feel it. Because it’s experimental. Magnificent. Daring. And so is life!

A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "HAVE" AND "BE" <3

On my last blog post I received a wonderful feedback. I thank you for that!!!

It was not just about the fact, that I had the generous chance to present my work in the magazine “Lideranço no feminino” as a supplement in the newspaper Público. Most importantly, practitioners and I, we opened up a conversation about the deeply personal meaning of our Ashtanga Yoga practice and its connection to daily life. 

Specifically, there’s this one respond, that touched me. 

In this blog post, you’ll find the eMail from Beatriz. There was just no other way to share it originally. In respect and agreement with her, I changed the name. 

In her eMail Beatriz shared with me so beautifully, honestly and purely her daily life. This alone is precious and makes me feel honoured, that she allows me in her life. 

Because, I believe so strongly in the beauty and power of ordinary daily life, of the little priceless moments of human connection among family, friends and encounters. So I also trust, that the practice of Ashtanga Yoga is directly linked to it. 


Life and Ashtanga Yoga are inseparable for me.


Besides of the many unique reasons why we engage with this practice of Ashtanga Yoga, I’ve come to experience that, through it you’ll be able to become strong in diving into your vulnerability. Strong enough, to transcend it into courage and connect purely with yourself, hence with others and play your roles not functional but rather with intention and meaning, love and care. 


I suppose, it reveals a significant difference between “have” and “be”. 


What you “have” and “do” in your life, doesn’t define you. It’s about how you engage with it. The way you act, where your action comes from and what you intend to contribute with it. 

In Beatriz’s eMail it becomes clear, in my opinion. Even though she writes, she doesn’t have much courage, I think, she represents a force of courage - in her intentions for herself, in the way she lives through her daily life, in the effort she takes care of her to be her best, contributes and serves others. 

Last but not least, I’d love to thank Nuno Filipe from Ashtanga Yoga Carcavelos, because he gets mentioned in Beatriz’s eMail too. You do so greatly. I appreciate your generosity and gentleness and clarity in your teachings. Beatriz said, she trusted me in my recommendation and you earned her trust too. It means a lot to me, because Im aware of the responsibility of teaching. Not only Ashtanga Yoga. Any teachings. Teaching is sacred! So thank YOU! Deeply grateful!

This is going to be a difficult email to write because English is not my “natural” language. Or I’m just apologise myself because I’m insecure about writing in English, as I am insecure about a lot of things in my live.
 
The context: I am 45 (almost, just a few days). I am a mother, not single, of a beautiful and supporting boy of 12 years old. And I am a working person, 8h30 to 17h, every day with 3h of commuting time. I do Ashtanga yoga twice a week most weeks, 1 time sometimes, have breaks and come back to Asthang again, lay my mat, take a deep breath and start again. From the beginning if I need it.
 
The why: some time ago I went to a workshop with you. I was the only one. I liked but I didn’t have the time to attend your classes. I was sad because of that. But then you told me about Nuno, a professor who could have a more flexible schedule for me, with later hours. I never had a men as a professor, I was a little bit concern about it. But I believed in you and I contact him and now I attend his classes. So, thank you.
 
Reading you story I can imagine the courage you needed to take that step. In fact, I can only imagine a fraction of that courage. Probably I don’t have and never had that kind of courage. So I take what I can, wake up every day, kiss my boy goodbye each morning, fix dinner, read a story because he likes it, try my best to be a good mother, pass good examples, a good wife to my very supporting husband, do my work at office the best I can and not stress a lot. This is my battle every day. Everybody have some kind of battle going on.
 
Who do I want to become? Myself, I guess. To be honest in my examples and attitudes, to be honest to myself and to find room inside me. If I can be this every day, this will be my legacy. I think it’s enough.

Room For Myself @JOURNAL PÚBLICO

This March 2018, it marks eight years of my life in Portugal. And it humbles me, that on the International Women's day of this year, my work with Room For Myself was presented among other 21 women entrepreneurs in Portugal in a supplement of the journal PÚBLICO.

I love to remember my beginnings here. 

I'd call it a labour of freedom. I went through several changes back in Berlin, discussions with my supportive friends and then there was this ONE NIGHT on the balcony in summer time. With my greatest woman friend Enne. She's got a couple of years more of an exciting life experience and she knew I was ready.

That night, we ended at 10a in the morning (Berlin's famous for that ;) ), with the sunlight in our neck and Berlin's heartbeat merged with ours. I'll never forget her encouragement, when we said good bye:  "Hau ab" (Just go!)! I went dancing the rest of this Sunday and quitted my job the next day, to leave Germany on 21 September 2009. Welcome Portugal!

The first three months from September until December were all about hanging loose, travelling, exploring, meeting people from all over the world. I felt always attracted my the energy of this country and somehow I knew, it's this environment to unfold to who Id love to be. Environment is essential. 

My experiences over the course of this special escape inspired me enough to eventually wrap up in Berlin,  drive down to Lisbon in March 2010 with a suitcase and my Yoga mat. Because, that's what I decided to do here, in Portugal. 

Dedicating my life to Ashtanga Yoga. 

My journey has been all about worthiness and belonging, inner freedom, connectivity and joy. About reinventing myself over and over again with one of the greatest learning, to commit to myself most of all. And Im sure, it this practice, that's kept me on this path - with patience, compassion and great challenges.

Though, I wouldn't recommend to just leave everything behind, I love to see women question their life, themselves, reinvent and start a new cycle. Each call is so valuable. Because that's the beginning. 

Wether it's designing a healthier lifestyle, creating more time for yourself, asking "Who do I want to become?", walking through pregnancy, finding your place as a new mom, understanding your emotions, getting to know your strength and inner beauty, establishing peace of mind, loosing weight and accepting your body - Ive learnt to trust deeply that Ashtanga Yoga can take you there and beyond. 

 

How I do help you - with my work in Room For Myself with Ashtanga Yoga?

I don't. 

I stand with you. Along your side.
All I do, I share with you this incredible, beautiful practice, hold your space, listen and take care, motivate and encourage, whilst you figure things out. And, you will!

Turning 30 I put myself on “Mission 30” (see post here). This mission was about changing my life. I didn’t know, what I was looking for but I took the leap. Along the way it became clearer, more concrete, tangible and SO enjoyable. 

Arriving at a point, where past has almost ;) been accepted, future remains unknown (and just always will) I found, my personal “changing my life” story is about worthiness and belonging, faith and inner freedom.

While growing into those beautiful inner values I figured life IS constant change. It’s a dance of events and happenings, commitments and surrender, success and failure, love and pain. Its about how I approach it and what I choose and why. 

For the next round of 10 years, Im asking myself what is truly essential in my life and how can I make my decisions based on that. Im not fully sure yet. My heart is circulating around trust, abundance, feminine strength, JOY, creation, independence.

Can you relate?


Most important, the path is walked in solitude. Yet, we aren’t alone. 

Ashtanga Yoga teacher Peter Sansons, who has my utmost respect, in the beginning of his talk he always thanks the organisers of the workshop. He does this in such a peaceful and determined way, that I feel, I could dive in his vast space of gratitude.

He mentions everybody, every little support, who also makes him able to deliver his best to teach every student individually. Last time, he finishes off with this: 

“Isn’t it beautiful how many people EASE our path every single day”. 

I felt goosebumps. Because Ive been aware of it all along my way.  
We crossed path as well. 

That’s why we, Zion and I, would love to hang out with you, say thank you and celebrate with you LIFE. With what we love most. Yoga, Ocean, Sport, Nature - and YOU.

THE LINK FROM GARDENING TO ROOM FOR MYSELF

This here is my first official newsletter.
Congrats! Or, in Zion's way, a fist bump and a "Good job, Mommy". 

In December last year I wrote my first newsletter to those I had the great opportunity to practice with. 

Three months ago, so after a whole lot working time behind the scene,  I decided to keep in touch with you with a monthly note in your inbox and hell, I did it all manual. Starting off with 20 eMails, then with 50 it become clear I needed to work with a program to support me. Having loved it to do it manually, because I was close to you and each person Ive come across, I do my best now to keep the connection with you through this newsletter too. 

Why do I wanna write? 

I truly believe, in the direct link from Ashtanga Yoga to our ordinary daily life. In combination with my personal experience as a student and friend, woman and mother of nowadays I feel the need to share and discuss it with you. Also, through interviews of practitioners I work with, I'll share how each person evaluates this jewel of a practice Ashtanga Yoga and how it has changed and keeps inspiring their life. 

Room For Myself I launched in the beginning of last year (blog post here).
Its about Ashtanga Yoga Private Teaching.

In this note you'll find further down, what it stands for linked to a tiny part of my story  and a current experiment with my son Zion in Gardening.

What could that have to do with Room For Myself? 

See here! 
School education in the Soviet part of Germany was under the influence of the country’s socialistic system. 

My favs were Sport and - you wouldn’t believe - Gardening. Yes, we were offered Gardening. The first four years of school at the age from 7 to 10 we learnt all about growing vegetables, fruits and herbs. 

Also my family used to take care of a garden in the back of our house. It was part of our culture. Well, there wasn't much in supermarket shelves either.  

I lost my joy in gardening during my studies at university and search for life and came humbly back to teach it now to my son Zion - in a small version. 

Why? Because, I’d love him to witness a natural cycle of life. One, that happens over and over again in our ordinary life too.

Here's Zion's project in Gardening :): 

Zion plants seeds in fertile soil. Then he needs to be responsible. He learns to take care and find the appropriate balance between effort, surrender and patience. 

When it’s time to water, when it’s time to protect, when it’s time for the nourishment of the sun, when it’s time to give space and wait for the sprouts to unfold. 

Together, we check the little sprouts of salad, carrots and broccoli every day. We’re in awe and love to witness natural growth and change. We find joy and share this moment sacredly. 

The continues process requires now, that Zion prunes the tiny field of sprouts, to give room for the ones to grow to the vegetable. It’s a difficult moment. Because it’s one of letting go and he griefs. Not all of the seeds we planted will make their way through. 

He may not be even successful with the sprouts we’ve left, but we'll keep going because, we want to enjoy our moments, the process and what we learn.  Zion trusts he may harvest some salad, carrots and broccoli and enjoy their gifts.

Most importantly, it happens all in STILLNESS. 

Being responsible, taking care, experiencing loss and yet keeping focused - Zion has been doing and experimenting it. With no validation from outside he stays consistent on his project. Day in and day out; and Im curious how he'll engage with the harvest and preparing earth for new seeds. I'll keep you posted. 

Planting vegetables with Zion, is for me a possible way to share with him cycles of life. In hope, he’ll learn naturally to be responsible, to loose, grief, let go and move on, grow his perseverance and celebrate his success to simple take a next step and so fulfill his life with substance.

Surely, life will teach him. But the seed is planted. 

For me, it was my personal Ashtanga Yoga practice, that taught me, what Im trying to share with my son - a natural cycle of life's phases. 

Plant a seed, take care of it with the best intention for yourself, learn what it takes to flourish it, let go of what would stop the process of growth, focus on what matters most, enjoy the moment, move on and plant the next seed. With time we're knowledgable, strong and humble enough to be able to take care of a garden.

I used to have a hard time in accepting the part of “letting go”. Stillness though used to be my dear friend. Now, after almost 10 years of practicing this ancient Yoga method, Ive learnt to surrender; or let’s say it’s become a way easier :) and has strongly contributed to my sense for inner freedom. 


Our soul is where we plant our seeds and cultivate what matters most in each of our lives.

A room for stillness and no disturbance, where we’re able to return at any given moment and renew, who we are and how we engage with life. That’s what Room For Myself stands for. 

The room for yourself, which needs to build, be taken care of and nourished compassionately. 
That, my friend, takes courage and will and adventure and surrender too. 
Which is, I quote my son "Really AWEsome". 

During the last 1 and a half year of specialising as a Personal Ashtanga Yoga Teacher for Room For Myself Ive shared the mat with inspiring women and men likewise, from different countries and backgrounds. Most of them have been in a challenging phase of their lives.

Yet experiences taught them, that the only way out is "in" - taking care of themselves and facing the current situation with what is. 

To be able to witness, how each practitioner benefits from the Ashtanga Yoga method is a blessing and I don't take that lightly. 

Ashtanga Yoga has become the source of my life and my intention is to help you engage with you in your personal Yoga experience.

Don't get me wrong, when you'll see the shot of me below. Ashtanga Yoga isn't about having the legs straight up in the air, nor put behind your head. By engaging in the postures as you are today, this practice is about your breath, about you and your life. The one that you're in and the one, you'd love to create, build and share from inside out.
